WHAT TYPE OF CAR IN COSTA RICA?

Costa Rica is a volcanic, mountainous country. Roads are not always in good condition and are even regularly flooded in the rainy season. It's best to rent a 4x4 in Costa Rica or at least an SUV for greater comfort and to be free to go anywhere with your own rental car in all Costa Rica.

Our advice:

• For couples travelling to Costa Rica, renting a 4x4 Suzuki Jimny or Hyundai Creta will do the trick: the engine is powerful enough and you'll have a trunk big enough to take your luggage to every hotel.
• For families renting a car in Costa Rica, pick a 4x4 Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage. You'll be able to put all your luggage in it and easily go from one place to another.

COMPARE PRICES FOR COSTA RICA CAR RENTAL

Here are the things to consider when comparing offers to find the best car rental prices in Costa Rica, as well as a few precautions:

Car rental insurance in Costa Rica:
When comparing prices from different car rental agencies, check if insurance is included in the quote to avoid extra charges at the agency. Costa Rica attracts tourists from all over the world, and car rental works differently from one company to another: some companies include car rental insurance, while others display attractive offers but then leave you no choice on the insurance.

Young driver surcharge in Costa Rica:
Some rental companies charge extra for drivers under 25 years old (sometimes up to 50% of the initial car rental price) and do not announce this on their website, just in the general conditions. And of course the rental is non-refundable... Take these kinds of details into account when comparing car rental prices.

GPS in Costa Rica:
Having a Gps is essential to drive in Costa Rica, and cars aren't always equipped. In this case, car rental companies offer it as an option and charge up to US$10 per day. Check whether this option is included in the service when comparing prices.

Cash payment in Costa Rica:
It is forbidden for professional car rental providers to ask cash payments, especially for the deposit. If a company asks you to pay in cash, do not accept it.

Additional drivers in Costa Rica:
There is always a charge for adding an extra driver to your contract while in Costa Rica. If you wish to add someone, you should generally include an extra US$5-6 per rental day (US$5 at Jumbo).

Cancellation fees in Costa Rica:
One point to consider if your trip is uncertain is cancellation fees. Indeed, general conditions vary from one company to another so it's worth comparing the conditions to find the best deal.

Beware of false economies from car rental agencies in Costa Rica:
Before making your reservation, take into account all the additional costs you'll add on top of the rental in Costa Rica, such as fuel consumption. Indeed, renting the smallest car to save on the daily rate is pointless if this model is not suited to the use you will have of it during your road trip and you might double your fuel consumption.

Price including VAT:
Check that VAT is included in the announced price to compare rates without missing anything. Since July 1, 2019, VAT (called IVA in Costa Rica) is mandatory for all rentals. The IVA is 13%. At Jumbo, prices always include IVA, no exceptions.

Hidden fees in Costa Rica:
Beware of hidden costs, such as vehicle recovery. Flights from Europe usually arrive in the evening, and some car rental companies take advantage of this to charge you up to US$75 extra if you collect your car after 6pm! At Jumbo, our agencies close at 9 p.m., and the fee to fetch your car after 9 p.m. is only US$35.

TIPS FOR CHEAP 4X4 CAR RENTAL IN COSTA RICA

Car rental in Costa Rica are ideal for excursions such as visiting a remote rainforest, taking a family vacation at the beach, or simply needing a convenient way to get from the airport to your lodging. A saloon will suffice if you are traversing main roads; however, a four-wheel drive or SUV is more suitable for exploring the mountains and providing additional cargo space. For sunbathing while exploring the coast, a convertible is the optimal vehicle.

Here are 3 tips to know when you rent a car in Costa Rica:

Book your Costa Rica car rental in advance

The earlier you book, the more likely you are to find a cheap rental at the airport. Rates are determined by the number of cars available. The earlier you make your reservation, the more likely you will find 4x4 available with the best rental deals.

Compare offers online and Costa Rica car rentals

Rental rates in Costa Rica are always better online than at the agency counter. On the Internet, competition is much fiercer, allowing a car rental company to anticipate your arrival at the agency, and keep costs down according to your budget. Take the time to compare rental rates and find the cheapest deal.

Rent the right vehicle car for your stay in Costa Rica

For a cheap rental, it's also important to take your fuel consumption into account and rent the right car for your vacation. Renting a way more cheaper car in Costa Rica is pointless if the car is not adapted to your stay. You may end up doubling your fuel consumption, and thus your holiday budget.

Costa Rican laws about car

Costa Rica's child car seat requirements are harsher than those in the United States. If your youngster is less than 110 cm (43 inches) tall, you must secure them in a car seat when renting a car to or from an airport in Costa Rica. Larger children must use a safety booster seat until they are 12 years old or 145 cm (57 inches). You will be able to hire a car seat or booster along with your rental car for approximately 2,924 SVC (5 USD) each day per child seat. Hertz and Sixt provide these optional options.

Crossing international borders is prohibited when renting an automobile in Costa Rica. Some automobile rental firms, however, will allow you to drop off your car in Costa Rica, cross the border on foot, and pick up a fresh car on the other side for a cost of approximately 29,585 SVC (50 USD).

The main benefit of renting a car in Costa Rica

The main benefit of renting a car in Costa Rica is the freedom it brings. By avoiding the squandering of time on public transportation, one can optimize their vacation time. Embark on a scenic 91-mile road journey from La Fortuna to Monteverde, traversing a densely forested reserve.

25% of our users discovered rental automobiles for $32 or less in Costa Rica.

On average, off-airport car rental locations in Costa Rica are 67% more expensive than airport locations.

DRIVING A CAR IN COSTA RICA

costa rica 4x4 rental

Highway code

Driving is on the right, and wearing a seatbelt is compulsory. Here are the general rules in Costa Rica :

• Traffic lights are as in the USA, in the middle of the intersection. Remember to stop first. The green light flashes to warn that it's about to turn orange, then red.
• Regarding alcohol, there's 0 tolerance while driving! If you have the slightest drop of alcohol in your blood, insurance companies will not cover you.
• Speed limits: in city centers, the speed limit is 40 km/h. Otherwise, most roads are limited to between 60 and 80 km/h, depending on the sections. Only freeways (autopista) are limited to 90 km/h for cars (trucks have other rules).
• In front of schools, the speed limit is reduced to 25 km/h.

Good to know: in Costa Rica, you will not need an international driving license. Your us driver's license is valid in the country for 3 months. Please make sure you have a valid driver's license way before you plan on visiting Costa Rica.

La Fortuna

Finding your way in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, directions are not always clearly defined with numbers and names as they are in Europe or North America. The most helpful way is to use a GPS or GPS app on your smartphone (Google Maps, Waze, etc.) and enter the name of the destination you wish to reach to get the most updated maps. For example: Hotel Pura Visa San Jose. Your package doesn't include Internet coverage? No problem, at Jumbo Car you can buy a sim card to access 4G during your road trip.

Road condition in Costa Rica

Road conditions may vary according to region and season. Roads in towns and cities are generally in good condition, but this is not always the case outside urban areas, which are not always maintained. During the rainy season roads are often flooded. Here's some useful information:

- All the main roads are generally in great condition, paved and have good signing. They are limited to 90 km/h.
- Secondary roads are often dirt or gravel, with potholes, stones or narrow bridges. They are limited to 40 km/h and can be impracticable in the rainy season. Although these roads are still accessible, we recommend that you drive a 4x4 rather than a sedan or city car, to avoid damaging the undershield of your rented vehicle.
- Trails are for adventurers. They run through wild, isolated areas, and they sometimes cross rivers or mountains. They require great caution and a good knowledge of the terrain. Without this kind of vehicle, these roads are not accessible.

Please note that it is forbidden to go off-road with your rental car or to cross rivers, which can be very dangerous.

Driving at night in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, night falls at 6 p.m. all year round, so there are no surprises. We recommend that you avoid driving at night for safety reasons:

- Poor visibility: roads are poorly or not at all lit at night, and signs or lines are often absent or faded. Also the stripes on the pavement are not very visible and it's difficult to see potholes, animals or obstacles. It also happens to come across pedestrians walking along the road without reflective clothing.
- Safety is reduced. by night, drivers are more tired, less attentive and sometimes drunk. There is also a greater risk of delinquency or theft in certain areas.
- Car headlights are sometimes misdirected and very powerful, which can be dazzling and might become a real nuisance when you pass these vehicles.

Furthermore, if you have an accident or breakdown of any kind, it's not advisable to stay alone in an unlit area. Go to a shop or a well-lit area and wait for assistance.

In short, it's best to avoid driving at night as much as possible, unless you have no choice or know the terrain well. Ideally, plan your journeys in order to arrive at your destination before nightfall (around 5.30/6 p.m.).

What to do in the event of an accident

In the event of an accident, make sure you don't move the car (except if there might be serious injury), or you may not be covered by insurance.

You'll have to call 911 (as in the USA) on your cell phone which will dispatch the Policia de Transito. You should also contact the rental company as soon as possible.

Only the police are authorized to draw up a report, and whatever happens, you must wait for them to arrive on the scene, even if the car has stopped in the middle of the road and is obstructing traffic.

You should also contact your insurance company on your cell phone, which will send one of its agents to give you a claim number. Go to a safe place and wait for assistance.

Speed limit in Costa Rica

costa rica san jose car rental

In towns and urban areas, speed limits are 40 km /h. or 80 km /h.

On highways, speed limits are from 40 km /h to 100 km /h.

If you're driving past a hospital or school, the speed limit is 25 km /h.

Please note that the police do not tolerate violations, and fines are very high.

Infringements and fines in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is generally not a corrupt country, and San Jose even less so. The police are well paid and don't ask for "commissions" to cancel a fine, that's just not something people do there so you might not want to consider this option when renting a car.

In the event of an infraction, payment is not due to the policeman, but to the bank. The policeman must give you a report of the offence, with the amount to be paid and the account to which you should transfer the payment. In the case of a rental car, notify the rental company immediately, as they can take care of the payment and add it to your bill since it is not included in the coverage. Traffic regulations are generally well respected by people there. Fines are substantial, and in the event of serious offence, the vehicle may be withdrawn. Here are a few examples:

No seatbelt: $185 USD
Telephone while driving: $185 USD
Speeding: $575 USD

It's also important to know that people under the age of 12, or under 1.45 m tall, must be seated in the appropriate equipment (baby seat). Otherwise, the fine will be 458.59 colones.

Gas prices in Costa Rica

At the moment, unleaded gas prices are around 590 and 720 CRC (between 0.89 and 1.07 EUR) per liter. The price of diesel varies between 535 and 5900 CRC (between 0.78 and 0.95 EUR) per liter. In Costa Rica, diesel is mainly reserved for trucks; most cars are petrol-powered. There are numerous gas stations throughout Costa Rica, and you don't need to get out of your car - the pump attendants fill up for you.

Parking rules in Costa Rica

Here are the parking rules to be aware of during your trip:

- It's forbidden to block the entrances and exits of hospitals, fire stations and parking lots.
- No parking on bike paths or sidewalks
- It is forbidden to park on spaces marked with a yellow line.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in the removal of the license plate, a hefty fine, and even seizure of the vehicle by the police.

Public transport in Costa Rica

Public transport in Costa Rica consists mainly of buses and a few trains. Although the country's bus network is fairly developed, if you don't have a car, you'll be limited to the times and destinations offered by buses. Some of the major cities and towns are not connected and roads can be in poor condition. Likewise, some remote locations such as hotels and lodges may only be accessible by 4x4 on poor roads. You may prefer renting a car in Costa Rica to be entirely free during your trip.

Deposit for Costa Rican car rentals

When you pick up your rental vehicle at a rental car company, you'll be asked to pay a deposit, the amount of which varies according to the vehicle reserved. This procedure is the same all over Costa Rica when renting a car. To proceed, you'll need a credit card (no debit cards accepted) on which the money will remain blocked (not debited) for the duration of the rental. The deposit is paid at the service counter of our car rental agencies just before you pick up your car. We ask our clients to make sure with their credit card company that they have sufficient funds, before their Costa Rican holiday.
